Renown as doughty Cup fighters "The Robins" first appeared in the F.A. Cup competition proper in 1934 although their first League scalp came in 1921-22 when they beat Tranmere Rovers 4-2 in the qualifying competition.
The period after World War Two saw little success at the club until Noel White and Peter Swales bought the club in the sixties. With Freddie Pye as manager, Altrincham won the Cheshire League Cup in 1964 and 1966. The latter year saw them win the League title for the first time and also reach the 3rd round of the F. A. Cup.
During the 70's Altrincham enjoyed much cup success; the highlights being a 1-1 draw at first division Everton and winning the F. A. Trophy at Wembley in 1978.
They were founder members of the Alliance Premier League in 1979 winning the Title in its first two years and failing, by one vote, to gain election to the Football League in 1980.

Cup saw victories over Crewe Alexandria, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Sheffield United, York, a draw gained at Tottenham and a visit to Anfield in 1980-81.In 1986 "The Robins" won the F.A. Trophy again and in that years F.A. Cup competition they became only the second non-league club to defeat a First Division club on its own ground, when they beat Birmingham St. Andrew's.
